Fasig | Brooks Law Offices has filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of the family of Khali Knight, a 23-year-old U.S. Army veteran who was fatally shot on July 17, 2024, at the ReNew Tallahassee apartment complex. The lawsuit, filed in Leon County Circuit Court, names VA8 Seminole Grand, LLC, which operates as ReNew Tallahassee; Trinity Property Consultants, LLC, the property management company; and Norwood Holdings, LLC, doing business as Signal of Central Tallahassee, the private security firm, as defendants. The complex is located at 1505 West Tharpe Street in Tallahassee, Florida, and was formerly known as Seminole Grand.
The complaint alleges that the defendants were negligent in failing to provide adequate security measures despite a documented history of prior shooting incidents and violent crimes on and around the premises. Attorneys Ryan Molaghan and Dan Hogan, who filed the suit, contend that the property owner, management, and security company failed to implement reasonable safeguards to protect residents and guests. According to the lawsuit, the defendants neglected to ensure proper lighting, sufficient security patrols, adequate access controls, and appropriate responses to known patterns of violent criminal activity.
Khali Knight's death, the lawsuit argues, was preventable. The shooter, who was a resident at ReNew Tallahassee at the time, pleaded guilty to federal gun and drug charges related to the murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. While the criminal case provided some measure of justice, the civil action seeks to hold the property owner, management, and security company accountable for allegedly creating dangerous conditions.
